William Johnson was a versatile defender, mainly a half back, and an all-round sportsman. He played his first games for Burnley reserves in 1911 and appeared regularly over the following few years, prior to the Great War, although he never played at senior level.

He worked in a local brewery and was from an Army background, living in India for many years with his military family before arriving in Burnley.

His war is over, his sun is set,
